Judgment Day

So if you haven’t already heard, According to a preacher in California, this coming Saturday, May 21st is the rapture – meaning all true believers of God will be taken from earth to be with the Lord and the non-believers will be left behind for the tribulation period which promises to be no picnic. Yes I’m a fan of run-on sentences.
*
Said preacher in Cali had previously predicted September of 1994 as the date but turns out he forgot to carry the 1 when he was number crunching. He’s not the first guy to do this but for some reason he’s getting a bunch of publicity right now. Seriously, if you haven’t heard about this yet then……well I’m sorry to hear about your coma….although if you’re reading this now then you’re out of your coma so congrats but don’t get too excited because Saturday is approaching.
*
Alright.

The above space was where I took a long exhale.
*
Alright. One of my many and I mean MANY aversions to exploring Christianity was the people. Let’s face it. The Christians who get the publicity or the spotlight tend to be people like Jimmy Swaggart, Benny Hinn, The nut-jobs at Westboro Baptist and this Cali preacher who claims to know the date of the return of Jesus. Even though Jesus Himself warned of false prophets and clearly said,
“….for you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.” Matthew 24:42
“…for you do not know the day or hour of my return.” Matthew 25:13
“…. No one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.” Matthew 24:36.
*
How can anybody believe a preacher who contradicts the words of Jesus? I’m guessing most don’t which is good. Oh I’m sure some believe but come Sunday morning they’ll begin to distance. I personally, am more concerned about the harm that this person and people like him are doing to non-Christians.
*
I argue that people like the ones listed above along with the self righteous “Christians”, the intolerant “Christians”, the in your face “Christians” etc…. Keep more would be Christians at bay than Satan himself. I also argue that they keep a lot of other “Christians” in the closet.
*
Try this out sometime. Play word association with your non-Christian friends. Throw the word Christian out there and see what they say. I know what I would’ve said before I became an unlikely Christian: Self Righteous, hypocrite, fake, weak minded, ANTI-everything, judgmental, political etc…. Who in their right mind wants to be associated with that?
*
I’m not saying that everybody out there feels that way but I know I did and I know for a fact that I wasn’t alone.
*
I was on Facebook today and came across a Post Rapture Party RSVP. I guess the people who aren’t planning on going with Jesus are planning a massive party on Sunday, once all the Christians are gone. Or as they lovingly describe Christians, “The Wackadoodle Fundies.” At the time of this writing, close to 30,000 have RSVP’d that they will attend.
*
Close to 500,000 will be attending the Post Rapture Looting Party. Honestly that kind of makes me giggle. I’m glad people are having fun with this but at the same time I do know that if Saturday or next Tuesday, 20 years from now or whenever Jesus returns, many of these people will be left behind. And many will be left behind because they don’t want to give Christianity a try. They don’t want to be Christians because of…..well because of “Christians.” I sure didn’t want to be one but thankfully God was relentless in his nudging.
*
To my Christian readers – We as Christians have got to do a better job of representing Christ. “We are God’s Ambassadors.” 2 Corinthians 5:11 We can’t allow “The Wackadoodle Fundies” to be the poster child for Christianity. For some of us, including me, that means we need to come out of our Christian closets and show non-Christians a different kind of Christian from the ones who are wrongly attracting the spotlight. A Christian that can begin to chip away at that negative stereotype. How do you do that? My guess is that if you are serious about it, God will direct your path.
*
To my non-Christian readers, those seeking God and/or those currently kicking the tires of Christianity – I implore you not to look at people as Christian models because we will always disappoint. Sorry but it’s in our DNA. There is only 1 model for Christianity, only 1 person you should look to as an example – Jesus. Don’t look at us, look at Him.
*
And please know this. We are not all “Whackadoodle Fundies.” We are humans. Like you, we make mistakes, we’re hypocritical from time to time, flat out wrong some of the time, nowhere near perfect, not even in the neighborhood. We are no better than you, nor do we think we’re any better than you. Some of us are messed up real good.
*
But we do know God. And our lives are greatly enriched because of it. There is something to this Christianity thing. I promise you. I am still young in my walk but in a short time my life has changed so much and for the better. Just like some of you I spent a lot of time on the other side. Never, ever did I think I’d be a Christian, yet here I am.
*
Okay, back to judgment day.  So is this Saturday it? Well let’s just say that I have a library book due on Friday and I’m planning on returning it.  My name is Bill Mitchell and I’m an Unlikely Christian.
